TCTD Awards 2009: Best Release

“Release” is sort of an abused term in the chip community. TCTD regards the term “release” as:

  • Contains a number of quality tracks from an artist or groups of artists
  • Album artwork and hosting so you can easily direct friends who might want to learn more about the artist or label
  • Quality tracks

The nominees this year include a variety of formats, from ROM carts to vinyl to digital to CD. Their common thread is that they are all collections of great tracks by some of the best artists in the game.

Here are your 2009 Best Release nominees:

Bud MelvinPopular Music / Self Released

Bud is one of the most interesting voices in the chip music scene, his songs eschew chip music cliches and use a wide spanning soundscape to paint expressive backgrounds for his madcap narratives.

Bondage FairiesCheap Italian Wine / LoboTom

Sweden’s favorite 8bit, punk rock, robot duo’s sophomore release did not disappoint, with more Pixes flavored Devo-inspired scatologia  that rocks from the first synth warble to the last downbeat.

Alex MauerVegavox2 / Pause

The master of the NES ROM album world (and thanks to NO CARRIER, it is actually becoming a world), this ROM showcases Alex’s acknowledged mastery of the 2a03 and gives you a glimpse of his lesser known pixel chops.

V/A – Blip Festival 2008: 32 Live Recordings / 8bitpeoples and 2playerproductions

Perhaps the definitive live chip music document, this release showed that the energy of Blip Festival and its performers can indeed be captured and will remain a keepsake of all involved for years to come.

c-jeffelectric / Pause

c-jeff’s concept EP shows off his considerable musical chops (with some help from his friends) and is one of the more touching and cerebral releases of 2009.

The Week That Was Chip f/ Bondage Fairies

ED: We are starting a new feature where we try to profile an chip artist a little under the radar, or one you need to check out. We will also bundle it with hot links from the week, for any highlights more casual readers might’ve missed. Enjoy, and feedback please!

fashionLast night I saw the Phenomenal gwEm perform live with Counter Reset. As my face was melting from my body, a thought occured to me. Those who can meld various genres with the chip music sounds, and do so in a evocative manner seem to be rare, but those who succeed are some of my favorites in the scene.

Perhaps one of the lesser known chip rock hybrid acts (think the likes of Anamanaguchi, Graffiti Monsters, or Depreciation Guild.) has to be Sweden’s Bondange Fairies.

There are a few incongruous elements you have to get by to appreciate their music. The name is taken from a famous hentai manga and has no impact on their image or music, other to illustrate their fascination with sex and the profane. Live they are a duo, a guitarist and bassist (named Elvis Creep & Deus Deceptor) who play late 80’s pixies style indie rock mixed with deep c64 style electronics. They never appear live or in photos without trademark robot masks.

Lyrics range from the scatological and outrageous (see Songs like Gay Wedding and Pink Eye Paranoia), to biting and sarcastic (like Indie Girl and HeMan).

He-man

01-he-man

But the common thread throughout all their music is how CATCHY it is. Take a blend of Pixies style rock, add c64 and casiocore drums, and throw in a nasal, constanly exasperated and bewildered vocalist whose unreliable narratives paint uncomfortable and vivid imagry on a host on topics from 80’s cartoons to cuckholderly to the sad state of shitty indie rock.

May will see the release of their second full length “Cheap Italian Wine” out on Audiolith and a small Euro tour is scheduled to follow. If you can’t get to see them live, the record is well worth your e-dollars.

New Bondage Fairies 7″ Single “Garbage Indiebands”

Pushing the boundaries of the chip definition, Bondage Fairires are a 2 piece Pixies style c64 weirdo flameout. They are following up their “What you didn’t know when you hired me” with the 7″ inch release “Garbage Indiebands”.
