Sega Sound Comparison

sega_genesis2_1

“There are many hardware and software options available to those that are writing music for the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis video game console. Each option has its own unique flavour of sound upon playback, in terms of tone colour, spectrum, clipping / overdriven waveforms, signal to noise ratio and the amplitude of the signal.

The aim of this page is to provide composers and musicians with an opportunity to listen to a number of the different models of Sega Mega Drive / Genesis. Below there are a series of recordings, made using the same music data and recorded using the same recording setup and gain structure. The resulting audio has not been normalized or affected in any way.”

The page can be found here. Additional content will be added over time.

gijs writes:

This is a sequencer that controls the controller of the sega, via a build in sequencer. The buttons on the nomad can be used to record a sequence. The sequencer advances by trigger pulses. The A,B,C buttons are also connected to relays that can be used to control bends via the magnetic patch bay.

little-scale: Sega Comparisons

little-scale writes:

I’ve made recordings of a number of Sega Mega Drive-compatible consoles playing back the same music. The audio below has been normalised.

  • A. Sega Mega Drive 1 (output via headphone socket):
  • B. Sega Mega Drive 2 (output via AV socket):
  • C. Sega Genesis 2 (output via AV socket):
  • D. Sega Mega Drive 2 with CCAM Mod (output via additional RCA sockets):
  • E. Sega Nomad (output via headphone socket):

My favourites are A and D, but I think for live shows D is a better option because of the form factor of a MD2 compared to the bulky MD1.
