Editors Note: I was given this for review the other day, but they uploaded and it got picked up by Random before i had a chance to publish. Here is my short review.
An interesting choice for the label, as the record is decidedly Game Boy Dance music, a genre that II seemingly was rejecting with their eclectic catalog. Once you check out the release, however, their intent becomes clear. Sonically the record sounds amazing, with production by Bud Melvin that is appropriately slick and polished, and helps the tracks sound full and dynamic to the benefit of the glossy dance intentions of the tracks. Stylistically the tracks sit somewhere between 8bitpeoples dance style, euro club techno, and old school game music. The barking dog doo-wop of “Give-up” may seem like its miles away from the slick clubby opener, Assuagement, but between the gulf, a clear portrait of the artist is revealed, and Nonfinite succeeds at bringing the tough chip choices of danceability versus sound design innovation, of slick production versus abolition of lo-bit charm to a successful conclusion.
