Natty – The Greased Cartridge

Jets Over Chandigarh by Natty

In 1857 a rumor spread throughout the ranks of Indian soldiers that their British rulers had greased the ammunition for their Enfield Rifles with Pig and Cow fat. The cartridges had to be bitten open before being loaded. Hindu and Muslim soldiers were outraged and thus began a bloody rebellion with cities in flames and British colonials massacred in scores. After the rebellion was put down by the British, the Anglo officers had fun tying Indian soldiers to the front of cannons and lighting the fuse.
