  • Interview – Radix

Six-question interview with the pioneer of module chip music himself:

    1. In the 1990s, you began writing module chip music… what introduced you
to the idea, and what led you there?

“Not entirely sure how I got started but I remember getting my hands on some chiptunes, and sitting down to study the techniques. One of the first chiptunes I listened to was Lost Scrotum by Paso. What a track :) I think I was immediately drawn to the simplicity of chip music, and to me they served as an outlet for all those naive melodies and pop elements I had growing inside my head, all this in a format which allowed me to get away with it :)

It’s funny because I never considered myself a chiptune musician. I certainly composed my share of chiptunes back in the day, but it was mostly for giggles and not my primary objective in the demoscene. Looking back, perhaps it IS the chiptunes that made the biggest footprint, I don’t know :)”

  • PornoTracker for (2a03/NES-Famicom) appeared

thefox of aspekt demo fame, according to his words, has “finally gotten around to releasing PornoTracker;” as it was used in the creation of the High Hopes demo.  Is this a BitTorrent server for adult media?  Some of us may wish it to be so.  In fact, PornoTracker is a chip music tracker for the 2a03/NES-Famicom designed with the purpose to function as a standard tracker with upgrading its sampling capabilities from standard 1-bit DPCM to a single channel of 7-bit PCM.  In laymans terms, samples sound prettier at the cost of CPU cycles.  Currently PornoTracker outputs to NES format; which can be played on an emulator or RetroUSB PowerPak.  I’ve been told as well that as soon as thefox finds out how to allow PCM support for the standard NSF format, that NSF export will be supported as well.  (#mod_shrine’s  mukunda and tumult have already demonstrated this is possible with SuperNSF except that in this case it’s a utility that converts IT to NSF with 4 additional PCM channels and VRC6 support as well.  See madbrain’s entry “Heim This!” in FamiCompo mini vol. 7.)  I guess we’ll just have to wait for thefox to “get’r done.”  ;)

Mad props to thefox, aspekt, #nesdev, and #mod_shrine for keeping shit alive and not only pushing audio value envelopes, but the envelope of hardware limits.

  • Time to Get Facundoed – C-Trix

Exclusive, amazing album from cTrix! cTrix’ words: “An exclusive release in support of Facundo. This spans 18 years of various Commodore Amiga originals and remixes. Some tunes here are from old floppies and you won’t find them anywhere else plus it’s all been recorded directly out a stock Amiga 1200 (with a little post-processing). The first track is from the new work-in-progress Sabrepulse/cTrix split. Thanks for supporting Facundo.”

Download and buy: Time to Get Facundoed | SAVE FACUNDO. There are a number of great releases from other chip artists there as well.

  • Diamond by A.M.U

I’ll start by mentioning that you can count the number of Chinese electro artist worth knowing about on one hand, and with A.M.U, it’s definitely your right thumb you should be raising. The album name Diamond fits without a doubt, as this truly is a rare gem. A.M.U has shown surprising maturity for a Chinese kid, so far away from all the western hype, and he is already leading the 8-bit music craze in the Middle Kingdom.

Heavy beats, insane melodies, smart programming and unusual bleeps … A.M.U’s ability to provide strong dance floor tracks straight out his Gameboy comes from his experience touring and smashing Beijing and Shanghai’s clubs with his unexpected DJ sets. Do not miss the chance to listen to Diamond – this jewel of an EP will surely end as your favourite new 8-carat ear piece!
