  • 1-bit Music Roundup on Chipflip

    GOTO Dreamy
    GOTO Dreamy

GOTO80‘s chip theory blog is always entertaining, and he has written a rad overview on making 1-bit music on z-80 based systems. An excerpt:

Ok, the new thing is 1-bit music made with Z80! Just like with the AppleII-post before, this is me being an astonished newbie. It sounds so nice and data, I can’t believe it’s not a sound chip!

So yesterday I found this and this, filled with mp3s of Z80-music made with the ZX Spectrum (or clones). This is how it works, according to Yerzmey: “Z80 chip produces all sounds and sends them into BEEPER and AUDIO-OUT connector of ZX SPECTRUM (jack) through ULA chip”. Normally you can play 1 channel square waves, but with the 3.5 MHz of this Z80 you can play samples and get up to 8 channels of sounds! So this is another example of chip music that does not only play sounds immanent inside sound chips, but uses the CPU to create a sort of softsynth.”

12:00 noon – Surrealtime 2: 8-bit Demo Show with Andy Voss
    • Phoenix (MindCandy DVD, Hornet PC demo archive) returns to showcase the latest and greatest demos on Atari 8-bit, C64, Vic-20, ZX Spectrum, and more. New this year will be demos made on homebrew 8-bit hardware and the DTV joystick, delving a little into the “circuit bending” phenomenon.  You’ll be amazed by the visual effects and music that can be wrestled out of primitive hardware.
1:00 p.m. – 2A03 Workshop :: Crash Course in FamiTracker with Baron Knoxburry
    • A one hour adventure through FamiTracker’s abilities to program the Nintendo Entertainment System’s 2a03 audio chip.  Baron Knoxburry shall expound upon the qualities and limitations of each voice, how to build instruments, explore all the effects commands, and try to maintain an open forum for discussion in the process.  And for anyone who thinks they know it all already — there will be a one hour competition starting 10 minutes before this workshop begins, so you can compete with the Baron of Knoxburry as he tries to teach a class! These fresh tracks, programmed within an hour, will be played back during the final 10 minutes so we can hear a variety of different styles.

  • xlr8r covers 8bit theft

Due to space considerations, the jellica centerfold was cut.

Written the the Scene’s own Nathaniel Adams, Techno and etc music journal xlr8r touches on the recent amount of chip theft that has plagued the perhaps too trusting nature of the scene. The article is a good starting point, but if your curious there are deeper articles on the topic here and here.
