Yet another 09/09/09 surprise, this time the Beatles-half of the blowout day that surprisingly has nothing to do with monophonic reissues or Rock Band: 8-Bit Operators, the same group that brought you the eponymous 2007 Kraftwerk chiptune cover album have just announced WANNA HLD YR HANDHELD, a new 20-track compilation covering the best of the Beatles.

The Operators say the full release will include tracks from 8-Bit Weapon w/ ComputeHer, Bacalao, Anamanaguchi, Bud Melvin, Burnkit 2600, Depreciation Guild, Glomag, Herbert Weixelbaum, Neotericz w/ Naku, Bubblyfish, Poke-1,170, Shrimps w Robert J Smith, gwEm & Counter Reset, goto80, Receptors, Psilodump, Cheap Dinosaurs, Saskrotch, Minusbaby, Rabato and Aonami.

  • gwEm interview pt 1

Pictures used with kind permission of Bit.Shifter

I was lucky enough to chat a little to gwEm, author of Maxymiser, hell survivor, Hardcore rave tunesmith and International Rock Star.

LB – Thanks most kindly for doing this.

    gwEm – No worries!

LB – What came first for you, music or computers?

gwEm – Hard to say… Today music comes first though, I don’t care too much for computers. I was very young when I had my first computer, so I can’t exactly recall. Maybe I had a musical instrument before then..?! No idea :)

LB – What was your first machine?

gwEm – It was an Oric Atmos 48k

LB – Not the most popular of machines at the time, did you start coding on it?

gwEm – Yes, but I was very young, and didn’t do much worth speaking about. It was all BASIC stuff.

LB – Did you hop from that to the Atari series or was there something in between?

gwEm – No, the Oric broke, and then our family got an Atari ST.

LB – Did the sound chip capture your imagination right away?

gwEm – I’d have to say no – that came much later. The late 80s demo scene didn’t attract me at all. Atari ST was based around the megademo format – which in retrospect is kind of cool but at the time I thought it was an ugly way to present screens. But it only took a couple of years to get into making music on the ST.

LB – Which trackers did you start on?

  • DATASTORM 2010, a new and exciting demoparty

    headerlogga
    Demoparty for oldschool platforms. ONLY.

Hey guys, long time no see. Been hella busy.

Anyway, I bring good news for those people in Scandinavia and those who want to travel over there next February (me!). Those crazy swedes at Up Rough and a bunch of other C64 people have joined to make a new demoparty called DATASTORM, intended to fill the void that LCP leaves after it finishes, and also exclusively dedicated to “machines with SOUL”.

The plan looks awesome and I am already making preparations to try to make it over there. The organizing squad is of top quality and the location looks promising, and of course you will find there a lot of the key figures of th oldschool demoscene.

The plans, pics of the venue, compo rules and more can be found at the party’s official website.

  • Bud Melvin – Trevor

One of the high points of a criminally short Pulsewave set from Bud Melvin. Catch him again at 8Static in October!

This is a sequencer that controls the controller of the sega, via a build in sequencer. The buttons on the nomad can be used to record a sequence. The sequencer advances by trigger pulses. The A,B,C buttons are also connected to relays that can be used to control bends via the magnetic patch bay.
