  • Skrasoft Midi pokey PCB

midipcbrev1The first revision circuit board came back for the Pokey MIDI synth. It is up and running wonderfully. Audio examples are the same as in previous posts, and I’ll put more together as the MIDI engine expands. This was all on a series of breadboards before, so it is nice to have it condensed down to a single printed circuit board. It is 4? by 3?, with MIDI in, power in, and a 1/4? line out.

  • Little-Scales fatter SN76489 bass

    via 8bc

    Big Bass:
Normally with the SN76489 (on the Sega, for example) there isn’t much bass at all (ie. the chip can’t go very deep in pitch), which is why I thought I would underclock a discrete SN76489 and see what it sounds like.

    Let’s Change The Duty Cycle:
Some further experimentation with the under clocked SN76489 revealed that it is possible to change the duty cycle of the sound output without too much effort.

    Timbral Droner:
A hypnotic droning sound, due to phase differences and duty cycle changes.

  • Sega Death

“sega death is a 2 member experimental sega genesis project. the members of this band are ian (dramacore) and lucas (sickmode). sega death started in 2008, in chicago illinois usa.

nothing in this album was sequenced, no outboard effects were used. EVERYTHING is from the sega genesis audio out, recorded directly into a computer. some bits of silence and excess noise were cut out. using a sega genesis, if the cartridge is pulled out while the game is playing and music is audible you will hear a tone.”

I remember back in the genesis days there were some game hacks where you yanked the cart and inserted another (maybe with the sonic game?) so this is an interesting application of the trick.

  • LittleGPTracker version 1.b_37 Out

lvpt1.1b_37 is in the ghetto section for GP2X/PSP/W32/DEB.

    Here’s the list of changes:

    • Allowed multiple selection for note and instrument editing in Phrase Screen
    • Fixed synchronization problem between the main thread and the player thread. This fixes the problem that tracks could go out of sync when doing rendering at full speed (not using RT). It might also generally improve the stability for heavy pounders
    • Rendered files are now located in the project folder.
    • Fixed tempo to be more precise: before, tempo vs. sample count transformation was rounded to integers. This meant that exporting a track at 80 BPM would end up to something close to it but not exactly it, which could be a hassle if trying to use renderings in DAWS. Now it’s totally accurate. It might be that the track’s feel is slightly different, so let me know if there’s something in concert for your ears
    • Updated the note map to be always show (for consistency). Mute track are now also shown by having both the octave & instrument number shown as “–“
    • Cached some file attributes to make samplelib browsing faster on PSP.
    • Fixed audio volume in preview so that it doesn’t destroy your ear. Now it’s played at half volume which correspond to the default 128 volume of instruments
