Safafa – Jellica

“This is a pretty serious release,” said Jellica in the email that accompanied my copy of Safafa. Like all great British eccentrics, Jellica is very serious about everything he does, whether he’s giving his tracks utterly unpronounceable titles, penning musical homages to cats or indulging in some of the most expressive free-dance you’re ever likely to see on stage at a chip gig. With Safafa, he’s set his sights even higher: nothing less than an epic counter-factual voyage to the stars, wherein space was conquered in the 80s by an Amiga-fixated generation of British kids. The tempos are slower on Safafa but Jellica’s LSDJ magic is as intricate and textured as ever, reflecting the contradictions of a journey where the enormous speeds achieved are dwarfed by the vast distances yet to be covered. All in a day’s work for Jellica – a serious man, but all the more fun for it.

Ockham’s Chainsaw – exileFaker

This EP was composed and recorded using a Nintendo Game Boy and Johan Kotlinski’s Little Sound Dj software over a period spanning 2009-2011, in New York City (with the exception of redshift, written on Long Beach Island, NJ). I spent much of this same period studying and teaching philosophy, which has, among other blessings, acquainted me with the limitations of words. Ockham’s Chainsaw is a fanatical application of William of Ockham’s advice to prefer the simplest hypothesis: the very simplest hypothesis is ” “. I believe that music is itself communicative, and I offer this EP as an argument for the conclusion: YES.

CulturaChip MicroCompo Master System

Another defying and exciting compo comes from the worlwide alliance for retro-arts supporting in spanish/portuguese speaking countries, mostly known as CulturaChip. This time, Sega Master System sound chip, the SN79489, is the target of all aims.

With the help of Delek’s emerging multisystem tracker (other plattaforms were of course allowed), Deflemask*, 4 chippers among CulturaChip held a fight against the limitations of this chip to get the hack right on the spot.

Conceived by Sergeeo, organized by Rolemusic, and aknowlegded in the community forum, this compo started few weeks ago, with a deadline for track submitting from February 22th to the 29th of the same month. After the sonic harvesting, a voting were open to all the members of the forum from March 1st to March 3rd. Now the final score is out and the voting results are:

FX4 | Jake Kaufman aka Virt

X4 is a concept album set in the oceans and skies. Its story immediately precedes that of FX3.
The album is free, and I am not expecting or asking for payment, although I appreciate donations — the proceeds will go toward software I need for my one-man indie game project.
Unlike the previous albums, which were written as “soundalikes” using sampled chip sounds, FX4 consists of machine code that can run on a real NES system. It was written in Famitracker, available for free at famitracker.com.
The NSF format files are here: biglionmusic.com/v-fx4.zip
If you don’t have NES transfer hardware, the NSFs can be played using VirtuaNSF (virtuanes.s1.xrea.com/vnes_dl.php — scroll to the bottom), or dozens of other players for PC, OS X, iPhone, Android, etc.
