  • Digital: A Love Story

We don’t cover many games on TCTD, but this one seems great.

    From TinyCart‘s review:

I admit it’s a weakness of mine that I must examine every game I enjoy through RGC’s lens, but as much as that DS title is a love letter to NES gaming, Digital is a tribute to those late nights wasted in front of your computer connecting to Bulletin Board Systems, analyzing strange screen names, and sending private messages to people you had no business talking to at your age.

Digital’s developer Christine Love provides this blurb for the PC/Mac/Linux adventure game’s premise:

“A computer mystery/romance set five minutes into the future of 1988. Crawl BBSes, uncover conspiracies, commit telephone fraud, fall in love. Welcome to the 20th century.”

Featuring a soundtrack from 4mat and starscream, amongst others, it seems like its worth a play, and the music is freely playable outside the game!

  • marie2 – This is marie2

    Tracklisting:

1 > THIS PATTERN GO WAY UP
    2 > POSSESSIONS
    3 > CALENDAR
    4 > GIRLFRIEND
5 > MY LONELY LIFE IN PRAGUE
6 > NOW I DONT KNOW HOW TO KEEP ON GOING

4mat occasionally makes EPs in other chip styles but does nothing with them because they don’t fit the music he usually does. Now he’s taken on a second handle (as marie2) to put them out.

Here’s the first one called “This is marie2”:
6 tracks, 13 minutes, no demoscene, no arpeggios.

  • TCTD Awards 2009: Best Artist

Our final award is somewhat nebulous and warrants a little explaining. It is someone who should be among the foremost names on your list when explaining chip music to outsiders, a person whose skills as a musician and composer are so inspiring that mere words cannot convey their importance to the scene.  The following nominations comprise artists from all the relevant categories. I am happy to present the (last!) award of 2009, Artist of the Year:

minusbaby – With a stripped down live approach,  quality EPs for 8bitpeoples and rocking pixel work, Minusbaby made numerous TCTD award shortlists. His music becomes more nuanced and engrossing with each release.

Bud Melvin – An amazing performer with an awesome release confirms my gut feeling that any year Bud is active, he is a nominee for this category.

4mat – One of the demoscene greats returns to the fold.  Even his WIPs and fragments outstrip many official releases.

Goto80 – Do you like breakfast?

Little-Scale – This insanely prolific inventor and composer was the overwhelming choice of the public in this year’s nominations. He is an innovative songwriter, a great live performer and he knows a thing or two about interfacing with his hardware.

  • Various Artists/ UK Chip Compilation/ Digital Force

The UK Chip Compilation showcases an astonishing 32 tracks by 32 artists who are themselves British or residents the United Kingdom.

Its aim was to present what the UK has to offer to the chiptune community and expand itself into having a more solid scene by bringing people together and showing awareness to UK residents that we have a large chiptune scene in our country which we could fairly quickly build on to have established annual gigs and events.
