Breakpoint 2009 wrap-up Part Two

I hope you enjoyed the demo wrap up because here is part two. I almost forgot about these, to be honest, so I am sorry!

What we have here is a bunch of files in the categories of Music, Graphics and Games.

All the oldschool platforms are bundled together on one music category, called “executable oldschool music”. Don’t ask me about the ‘executable’ part, some of these did not come in any sort of executable format. Pixel graphics are not a very popular thing nowadays on the demoscene, so this year we only got one category to cater for that: C64 graphics. Fortunately for the oldschoolers among us, they made an unofficial compo for ASCII and ANSI graphics so we have that too. Then we have 96KB game, which was multiplatform and had a very cool game for the C64.

So, let’s hit it on with all the data!

Squidman’s ym2151 tracker Herzeleid

herzeleid3A little while back we mentioned that Squidman had documented the YM2151 soundchip. The tracker “Herzeleid” is in the extremely early development but it is available for the brave to try. It is cross platform, but please note you will need to compile it yourself. B00daW and the Squidman are talking about the tracker in this 8BC thread where you can follow the development and find some useful info if you have problems getting it to run. Keep your eyes on this one, I have a feeling its going to develop into a very interesting piece of software.

MD2PC Appeared

This is quite old, but it should be something people here find useful (once I am done with it tongue).

The setup consists of a real MD, a flashcart, a controller port to LPT port cable and PC running some host software.
Cable is same as what is used with Mask of Destiny’s Sega CD Transfer Suite ( http://www.retrodev.com/transfer.html ).
When all CPU time is put into managing data transfer, you can get 32KByte/sec bandwidth. Things are bidirectional BTW.

The protocol is made multipurpose so you can do graphics and run code or do whatever you want more besides sound generation. There are a lot of “internal” functions, but you can always send in your own and use those instead.

Things are incomplete though, as you can hear… only PSG and PCM work, FM is still WiP (I have a very fatal error somewhere in the code that causes lockups and whatnot…).

What you see on the (poor) vid is my ultr@ modded MD2 being slaved by my work PC that runs my WiP MD Tracker 0.6a that is executed straight from QB45 IDE (mainly because the program is too big so it cannot be compiled anymore ).

If things go well, there’s gonna be some more stuff coming in summer (along with Win version of the tracker).

PS: be sure to check the link in vid description for the full tune I used smile

Sega Death

[kml_flashembed movie="http://www.youtube.com/v/SsHGet3HpWk" width="425" height="344" allowfullscreen="true" fvars="fs=1" /]

“sega death is a 2 member experimental sega genesis project. the members of this band are ian (dramacore) and lucas (sickmode). sega death started in 2008, in chicago illinois usa.

nothing in this album was sequenced, no outboard effects were used. EVERYTHING is from the sega genesis audio out, recorded directly into a computer. some bits of silence and excess noise were cut out. using a sega genesis, if the cartridge is pulled out while the game is playing and music is audible you will hear a tone.”

I remember back in the genesis days there were some game hacks where you yanked the cart and inserted another (maybe with the sonic game?) so this is an interesting application of the trick.
